Working with AI to save time and increase quality in your teaching (while still being a healthy sceptic) an ELTAU e.V. workshop with ANDY LEAL (Ulm) and ALEXIA SCHEMIEN (Berlin) In this hands-on workshop, you’ll explore how AI tools can support your teaching—saving time, sparking creativity, and helping you design more engaging materials. We move quickly from inspiration to action. After a short input on how AI might impact our industry over the next five years, you’ll see concrete examples of how you can use AI as an assistant to expand what is possible in your teaching. We will explore ways to optimise planning, material creation, tailoring resources and feedback, as well as how to help learners use AI to take greater control of their learning. Then it’s your turn: you’ll experiment with AI tools to create your own materials and develop and refine ideas in a supportive, collaborative environment. A key focus throughout is the exchange and development of best practice: sharing experiences, comparing approaches, and reflecting on what works (and what doesn’t) in different teaching contexts. You’ll leave with: • a ready-to-use teaching resource • practical strategies for integrating AI into your workflow • greater confidence in using AI critically and effectively About the speakers Andy Leal is a language and international people skills trainer with more than 30 years of experience helping professionals communicate confidently in global business. As the owner of O’CONNOR Language and Communication for Business, he leads a team of over 20 trainers who support corporate clients in performing their jobs more effectively when working in English. Together with Bob Dignen from Rethink Consulting, Andy has developed Core24, a suite of international people skills workshops, which develops the mindset and communication skills necessary to work successfully in an international context. Andy describes himself as a "sceptical technophile", looking to embrace the value of new developments without adopting technology for its own sake. In his workshops he focuses on providing engaging, practical input grounded in real experience, while actively encouraging participants to share their own insights and practice. Alexia Schemien is a Business and Technical English lecturer at the Berliner Hochschule für Technik (BHT) with over 15 years of experience in higher education teaching. With an interdisciplinary background, including a PhD in Inter-American Studies from the University of Duisburg-Essen, she supports students in developing the language, communication, and critical thinking skills they need to succeed in professional and international contexts. Her current teaching and research interests include intercultural communication, AI in language education, learner autonomy, and future skills. She designs practical, engaging learning experiences that connect research with classroom practice. As Conference Events Coordinator for IATEFL BESIG, she also contributes to creating opportunities for Business English professionals to connect, exchange ideas, and learn from one another. Alexia believes the best way to explore AI is by working alongside fellow educators through open exchange, practical experimentation, and collaboration. Followed by dinner in Ulm.
